nef Bigger Picture - festival of interdepedance

lowwintersun is part of the new economics foundation's (nef) Bigger Picture project and its centre piece, the ‘festival of interdependence‘, taking place on Saturday 24th October 2009 at the Bargehouse on the South Bank. The project examines our future in the context of economic, environmental and political crisis. lowwintersun has been developing 'arts + the new economics' a series of art installations examining these issues and the first piece, Ration Book by Clare Patey, can be seen at the Bigger Picture as well as Platform's C-Word exhibition at the Arnolfini in Bristol.

Communities for Change sustainability event

Communities for Change event–

After nine months of hard work and preparation the 'Communities for Change' event took place at Manchester Metropolitan University's Campus in Didsbury, Manchester. Around 150 people from over 50 community groups taking action on the environment participated, with a selection of rooms and activities on offer covering films, music, open space discussion, food and transition towns. It was great to see so many amazing sustainability projects from around Greater Manchester represented and to see new links and ideas emerging over the day. More can be seen on this new mini-site for the project.

Manchester Carbon Co-op workshops

Carbon Co-op secures Big Green Challenge Funding–
08.08.09

The Carbon Co-op, lowwintersun collaboration with Urbed Co-op has received funding from the Big Green Challenge. Last year, Carbon Co-op was shortlisted for NESTA's £1m prize challenge but failed to make the final ten projects. This year the Department of Energy and Climate Change has returned to select 17 projects for funding. The Carbon Co-op will run a year long energy saving project with a residential street in South Manchester. It will examine how people might work together to save carbon and reduce bills.

Pre-publicity for the Manchester 'Communities for Change' and 'Transition Journeys' projects has been released. lowwintersun has been developing, researching and delivering this project which celebrates community groups taking action on the environment in Greater Manchester and beyond. During July and August a series of Transition Journeys by canal boat, bus and train, link up innovative community sustainability projects around the region. On September 12th the 'Communities for Change' event at MMU in Didsbury will showcase these and other projects. The event is a partnership project funded by Community North West, MMU, North West Together We Can and Federation for Community Development Learning.
